What is a Solicitor?

The Solicitor in Portugal  is a self-employed professional who performs the most varied legal acts on behalf of another person (individual or collective), for remuneration.

The Solicitor is "nothing more" than a service provider who is able to represent, advise and accompany citizens, in order to protect their rights, as well as to alert them regarding their duties and assist them in legal problems that may arise.

Through the Attorney's Office, the Solicitor represents citizens, companies and public or private organizations, in multiple legal transactions, preparing and obtaining all necessary documentation, from the Finance Services, Registry Offices, Municipal Chambers and other entities, thus guaranteeing security and negotiation certainty.

Through Legal Advice, the Solicitor prepares the most varied contracts (purchase and sale; donation; mutual; mortgage; lease; lending; exchange; sharing; partnership; work; …). applications and petitions.

Since the entry into force of DL 116/2008 of July 4th, Solicitors have been given the power to authenticate documents, the so-called Authenticated Private Documents, which have the same legal and evidentiary value as Public Deeds, and can also be registered. The  Solicitor  in his professional practice can also certify photocopies, certify translations and recognize signatures.

Through Legal Consultancy, the Solicitor provides the necessary legal advice in the various areas of: Civil, Commercial, Corporate, Labor, Tax, Registration and Notary Law.

!!! Only those who are duly registered with the Order of Solicitors and Execution Agents can exercise the profession of Solicitor, as this is the entity that regulates access to the profession.
